Shamrocks shock for Garrycastle

Mullingar Shamrocks 0-12 Garrycastle 1-08
Garrycastle’s dream of winning four Westmeath SFC titles in-a-row ended yesterday when Mullingar Shamrocks were crowned champions, winning by a single point in this closely contested replay in Cusack Park, Mullingar, yesterday afternoon.

Garrycastle, last year’s All-Ireland club finalists, led by 1-6 to 0-6 at half time, after James Dolan had scored a 16th minute goal. However, in a niggly game that saw 13 yellow cards produced, Shamrocks came storming back. Points by Anthony Clinton, Ciaran Curley and Sean Daly had the sides level as the game entered the last five minutes.

Then in injury time, a free by Sean Daly, followed by a wonderful point by play from Daly, saw Shamrocks move two ahead. A late point from a free by Dessie Dolan wasn’t enough to save Garrycastle and Mullingar Shamrocks were crowned champions for the first time since 2000.
