Mighty Moorefield again kingpins

Moorefield 1-15 Sarsfields 1-06 Moorefield cruised to victory and retained their Kildare SFC crown after a dominant display in a largely one-sided replay at St Conleth’s Park.

Despite conceding a goal in the second minute, Moorefield took the lead on the quarter-hour and never looked like losing.

Having relinquished a five-point lead in the closing stages of the drawn game, Sarsfields fell flat second time around and left Newbridge a beaten side again.

“We learned a lot from the drawn game, it was the winning of the match”, said Luke Dempsey, who was managing Moorefield to their second successive county title.

Dempsey dropped midfield talisman Daryl Flynn but by bringing centre-back Ross Glavin to the middle and introducing James Lonergan as a man-marker on Ray Cahill, who scored 0-10 in the drawn game for Sarsfields – the Moores gained the edge in the replay. Robbie Confrey had given Sarsfields the perfect start with a goal in the second minute but it was a false dawn for John Crofton’s side.

Moorefield, thanks to a man-of-the-match display from Ronan Sweeney, controlled the middle third and went ahead at the end of the first quarter when Ciarán Kelly goaled after good work from Eddie Heavey.

The Moores scored 1-3 without reply to take a three-point lead after 21 minutes. The led 1-7 to 1-2 at the break, as Sarsfields continued to struggle against the breeze. Sars stormed out on the restart with two points in as many minutes. Another cliffhanger was on the cards but Moorefield were unmerciful. They reeled off five successive points to take an eight-point lead by the 49th minute and when former Kerry minor Eanna O’Connor kicked a 45 into the breeze with seven minutes remaining only the margin of victory was in doubt. There was a sour end for Sarsfields when Gary White got straight red in injury-time while centre-back Sean Campbell and Moorefield’s Ronan Sweeney ended the game on the sidelines when shown second yellows.
