McGuckin goals do trick for Derry

This game was effectively over after 10 minutes, by which stage the Oak Leafers were 1-4 to nil ahead and in total control in all sectors.

Fergal Duffin, who roamed all over the park in the first-half, had the games’ first goal, tapping a loose ball to the net midway through.

Monaghan did have a couple of goal chances but good defence and poor decision making kept them scoreless from the 7th to the 27th minute before Pete Dooney converted a free.

In between, Derry kept picking off points, a wonderful goal from Emmett McGuckin five minutes from half time helped the home side to a 2-7 to 0-2 interval lead.

The second-half was all one-way traffic as McGuckin netted his second for 3-7 to 0-3.

Derry kept the scoreboard ticking over but Stephen Sherry did find the net for Monaghan to give them some cheer. It made no difference, though, as Derry coasted into the semis.
