McDermott gets fitness guru McGurn on Banner backroom team

CLARE senior football boss Michéal McDermott has secured the services of renowned fitness coach Mike McGurn for the 2011 season.

McGurn was involved in a peripheral role with the county last season and also assisted McDermott during Kilmurry-Ibrickane’s run to the All-Ireland club senior football decider last March.

His extensive CV includes stints with the Irish rugby team, the Irish International Rules squad and the Armagh senior footballers and his availability is a major coup for the Banner setup.

Meanwhile McDermott is set to dangle the carrot of inter-county football before a number of players in Dublin who are of Clare parentage. McDermott travelled to the capital last weekend on a scouting mission and took in some of the games in the Dublin SFC quarter-finals.

“There are two lads who are playing with St Brigid’s in Dublin and I went up to see them at the weekend, that would fit the category”, said McDermott, speaking in The Clare People . “David O’Connor is one, he’s a young guy and the other guy is Colin Lynch.

“The rule applies to a county that hasn’t won a provincial title in the last ten years. We fit the bill there. Cavan used the rule last year with Gareth Smith, who plays with Oliver Plunketts in Dublin and he was a huge addition.

After looking at Smith doing it last year, I started thinking about doing the same with Clare. I remember back to the Leitrim days when Declan Darcy and Jason Ward played with them and won Connacht Championship medals in 1994, I said to myself ‘let’s investigate this’.

It’s very much in its infancy at this stage as regards identifying players that probably would benefit Clare football in a number of positions and then approaching these players to see if they would be interested.”
