Madden goals power Críost Rí through

Coláiste Chríost Rí 2-10 Coláiste An Spioraid Naoimh 0-7

CHAMPIONS Coláiste Chríost Rí booked their place in the Corn Uí Mhuirí quarter-finals when they got the better of Coláiste An Spioraid Naoimh in their final group game at Ballincollig yesterday.

Attacker Barry Madden was star of the show in a hard-working Coláiste Chríost Rí outfit, scoring 2-4 – his goals in either half setting the titleholders up for an eventual nine point win.

Coláiste An Spioraid Naoimh put up a determined challenge, especially in the opening 30 minutes (they trailed by four points at the break) but Coláiste Chríost Rí turned in a spirited second-half performance to claim the spoils.

After getting off to a solid start with points from Conor Horgan (2) and Philip Kelleher, they were pegged back by Coláiste Spioraid Naoimh who moved level with a long range point from Michael Collins.

However, Madden’s goal – an amazing volley to the right corner of the net — on the brink of half-time handed the initiative back to Coláiste Chríost Rí who led at the break, 1-4 to 0-3.

Although Coláiste An Spioraid Naoimh restarted with points from Conor Dorman and Diarmuid O’Sullivan, sterling defensive work, primarily by Alan Nolan and Stephen Cronin, left Coláiste Chríost Rí in decent attacking positions.

Four unanswered points from Madden (3) and Enda Dennehy placed them in a commanding 1-8 to 0-5 advantage with the final quarter left to play. And while the Bishopstown College wasted a good few chances up front, centre-back Ian Maguire and Dorman in particular, continued the fight.

Sam Oakes pointed on 55 minutes but the signs were ominous as this was their only score from play in those closing stages.

In contrast, Coláiste Chríost Rí finished with a flurry. A Conor Horgan free two minutes from the end made it a six-point game (1-10 to 0-7) but what followed was one of the best moves of the hour when Madden teamed up with Jack Horgan to close out the game. His low shot to the far corner of the net gave David Minihane no chance at all.
