Long wait over as Cavan win battle of the St Patrick’s

St. Patrick’s, Cavan 2-12, St. Patrick’s Academy, Dungannon 0-8:

St. Patrick’s, Cavan tore the formbook to pieces at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh yesterday when they emerged comfortable 10 point winners over St. Patrick’s Academy, Dungannon in the Danske Bank MacRory Cup final.

It was an outstanding display from the winners to win their first title at this level since 1972. Nobody could have foreseen the winning margin in a contest that was tight for forty five minutes.

The sides shared the opening four points with Mark Donnelly and Darragh Kennedy on target for their respective sides. Cavan then got on top to move three clear thanks to efforts from Thomas Edward Donohoe and Thomas Galligan.

As the half came to a close Daniel Kerr and Cormac O’Hagan narrowed the gap to the minimum and they almost got in for a goal but for a brilliant save from Fergal O’Rourke to deny Fintan McClure.

Kerr almost got in for a goal early in the second-half but O’Rourke denied him at the expense of a point. An O’Hagan free levelled matters and at this stage they looked to have all the momentum.

That’s when Cavan stepped on the gas and their opponents simply had no answer. Kennedy and Galligan pointed from play with Donohoe knocking over a brace of frees as well. In the 51st minute it was game over when a flowing move was finished to the net by Donohoe.

Dungannon had to throw caution to the wind and in doing so they left gaps at the back and Donohoe exploited it again with another expert finish low to the net as they won with plenty to spare.
