The hosts seemed destined for victory at Carriganore when Gavin Crotty dispatched a spot kick with seven minutes left. Three black cards contributed to their demise however as manager Tom McGlinchey rued another slender defeat. Déise have lost five Division 4 games by two points or less in his tenure.
“It isn’t over until the fat lady sings. There was four minutes of injury-time and we just didn’t hold out. Here we are again at the other end of a devastating loss.”
Waterford retaliated from six points down in the second period with the wind at their backs. Louth corner forward Conor Grimes was shown a straight red by Michael Collins on 42 minutes for striking out at Brian Looby. The Cork whistler also brandished four yellows and four blacks.
Top scorer Paul Whyte kicked three points from play before Patrick Hurney was cynically fouled by Darren McMahon for a penalty. Crotty sent Craig Lynch the wrong way to give them a 1-9 to 1-8 advantage but black cards for Donie Breathnach, JJ Hutchinson and Darren Guiry halted that momentum and Burns came off the bench to rescue the visitors with two late dead balls. The 20-year-old had only recently recovered from a foot injury.
Colin Kelly’s men led 1-7 to 0-4 at the interval with seven different players contributing. Wing back Derek Maguire rattled the bottom corner on five minutes after collecting a knock down from Grimes. So the Wee County move towards the three week break at the top of the standings. “The character they showed was tremendous,” Kelly commented. “We left it a little bit behind us in the first half and then we lost Conor. It definitely wasn’t a red card but he was naïve to get involved. It’s a while since a Louth team won away from home and it’s another two points on the board.”
