Kinsale pay penalty for lacklustre start

St Maurs (Dublin) 2-13 Kinsale (Cork) 3-8: Kinsale boss Michael O’Connor suspects his players paid too much respect to winners St Maurs in Saturday’s All-Ireland Ladies Club JFC final.

By half-time, Cork and Munster champions Kinsale had a mountain to climb as they trailed by seven points, 1-4 to 2-8.

The sides were level at 1-3 apiece by the 20th minute but St Maurs then hit 1-5 without reply to gain the upper hand. Laura Carthy scored the game’s opening goal in the ninth minute and while Aoife Keating’s major was an equalising score for Kinsale, St Maurs took over until half-time.

Player of the match and Dublin senior star Olivia Leonard scored the second St Maurs goal and while Cork’s All-Ireland minor winner Sadhbh O’Leary netted twice in the second half, one of those goals a penalty, St Maurs held out in front of a bumper crowd at Netwatch Cullen Park.

Kinsale lost Emma O’Brien to a late sin-binning and St Maurs claimed national honours in the battle of the first-time finalists.

The Dubliners operated with an extra defender back and that helped to limit the influence of Kinsale’s All-Star forward Orla Finn.

It was one of those days for Kinsale, who also lost goalkeeper and captain Aisling Judge to injury in the first half.

O’Connor said: “In the first half, they probably gave them a little bit too much respect. In the second half, they went out there and laid it on the line, they pushed, did everything they could.

“A couple of scores there didn’t go right for us, we had a couple of chances. But that’s sport.”
