Galway ease to second win in four days

Walsh Cup - Galway 1-21 NUIG 1-12: It’s been a hectic start to Micheal Donoghue’s reign as Galway manager and, while it is very much early days, he will be encouraged by the manner in which they chalked up their second win in four days.

They were on top throughout a good contest as the Walsh Cup holders remain on course for a place in the semi-finals, which they will hope to wrap up when they play Westmeath at the weekend. Nine members of the Galway side which started the All-Ireland finalagainst Kilkenny were in action from the outset with four of them lining out for NUIG.

Galway led by 1-10 to 0-8 at the end of an entertaining opening half, with the Tribesmen opening up a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after just seven minutes with Eanna Burke and Joe Canning particularly sharp. The students hit back with Clare’s Bobby Duggan leading the way and his accuracy from frees was key, shooting 0-7 by half-time.

The Galway goal came after eleven minutes when Canning set up Brian Molloy for a fine score.

Points from Eanna Burke, who went one better than his 0-4 haul against DCU on Sunday, Canning, Molloy and Padraig Brehony stretched the Galway lead after the restart.

But then Duggan followed up a couple of frees with a goal and suddenly there were only three between them going into the final quarter.

However, that was as close as the students got as Canning kept tacking on frees and with Brehony bringing his tally to 0-4, they eased their way to victory.
