Galvin struck in Kerry draw

Lixnaw 0-11 Kilmoyley 0-11
This Kerry senior hurling championship final was overshadowed by a shocking incident when a member of the public came onto the field and struck former county football star Paul Galvin.

Last night county board chiefs issued a one line statement on the matter which occurred moments before the start of the second half when a man wielding a hurley attacked the Lixnaw man.

“The Competitions Control Committee of the Kerry County Committee is awaiting the referee’s report before deciding what course of action to take following an incident that took place as players and officials made their way onto the field of play for the start of the second-half in today’s senior hurling championship final.”

The opening half had been a poor spectacle with wind assisted Kilmoyley failing to use the elements to their advantage as they retired 0-7 to 0-4 ahead with Daniel Collins (3), Adrian Royle (3) and Aiden McCabe amongst their scores. Three Ricky Heffernan points and one from play from Galvin kept Lixnaw in touch.

Then came the game’s talking point which began with an off the ball clash which left Kilmoyley’s Tom Murnane on the ground.

The incident led to a mass brawl before a man rushed from outside the whitewash brandishing a hurley and he struck Galvin. However, quick action by the a steward, saw the assailant removed from the pitch. He was subsequently escorted by a Garda from Austin Stack Park. Before the second-half got underway, yellow cards were brandished to both Galvin and Murnane and thankfully the second-half proceeded without incident.

Lixnaw took charge as a succession of points followed from Heffernan (3), Galvin and Stephen Power, as they forged 0-9 to 0-7 clear. But their momentum was halted with the dismissal of Mike Conway for a second yellow card. The sides traded scores before Kilmoyley came with a late surge of scores from Collins and Murnane to force a draw, with a replay date still to be confirmed.
