Coleman proves the ace as 14-man Blarney stand firm

Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál Blarney 0-17 Roscommon CBS 2-9

Favourites Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál Blarney had to fight all the way for their two point win over Roscommon CBS in the Masita All-Ireland Post-Primary Schools Cusack Cup Senior hurling C final at Templemore yesterday, their first title in the grade.

Playing with 14 men with seven minutes to play, Blarney hung on grimly for a victory they fully deserved and might have achieved even more comfortably but for shooting 12 wides.

Mark Coleman was the star of the show for Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál, scoring nine points from midfield. He was ably supported by Alan McEvoy, Brian Buckley, Barry Dennehy and Conor Power.

Roscommon were seeking their first title but came up just short. They relied heavily on the scoring of full forward John Murray but Eoghan Coyle, James Walker, Oisin Lyons and Michael Feeley were others to catch the eye.

An early goal by James Walker for Roscommon after four minutes ensured the Connacht champions kept in touch with their Munster rivals, for whom Coleman’s accuracy from play and frees was crucial as Blarney forged an interval lead of 0-10 to 1-5.

The winners’ challenge was not helped by the loss of David O’Donovan through injury after 20 minutes, but they still looked the more likely winners.

The Cork side extended their advantage to three points early in the second-half but the accurate John Murray from frees kept Roscommon in touch.

Blarney were leading 0-16 to 1-9 with seven minutes to play when they lost Brian Walsh to a harsh red card. Coleman had a further point for them but in the 59th minute, as Roscommon piled on the pressure, Walker grabbed his second goal to leave them only two points adrift.

As the game moved into injury time, Blarney hung on grimly for a deserved victory and might have achieved more comfortably but for shooting 12 wides.
