Heroic Hodnett rules roost as Skibb sparkle

O’Donovan Rossa 1-13 Dohenys 1-07

Operating at centre-forward, the former county panellist contributed a massive total of 10 points as the Skibb side marched into the mix for summer battles , while for Dohenys it’s the losers round again.

Earlier this season Hodnett was involved with the county senior footballers but didn’t make the cut. However, on this form he is certainly well worth another look at as he gave an exhibition of point scoring.

This West Cork derby tie drew a fair sized crowd to a fine venue, and while the Dunmanway side had every incentive to reverse last year’s 3-11 to 1-11 defeat, there was never a hint of upset once Rossas hit the front two minutes in.

Playing into the stiffish wind, the Skibb side attacked from the throw-in and when Hodnett’s effort came back of the upright, Colin Crowley was in the right position to drill the rebound to the net.

Dohenys rallied strongly from that early setback and using the long ball to good effect, they were level by the end of the opening quarter at 0-4 to 1-1, as Mark Quinn showed his prowess from placed balls.

Dohenys needed a sizeable lead at half time but struggled for scores against a tenacious Rossas defence in which Paddy Nealon and Paudie Crowley were rock solid.

Rossas turned to play with the elements a point to the good, but were rocked when Mark Quinn levelled the game for the third time and Alan Sheehan rifled home a goal from a penalty to take a surprise 1-6 to 1-3 lead after 33 minutes.

However, that was as good as it got for Dohenys as Hodnett began to show his class. Playing the proverbial blinder, he kicked seven points in-a-row, and Skibbereen were coasting.

However, Dohenys refused to buckle and were thrown a lifeline when they won a second penalty with 10 minutes to go. But the Skibb ‘keeper Ryan Price got down well to deflect Alan Sheehan’s effort out for a fruitless 45.

A Mark Quinn point eventually gave Dohenys their first score of the second-half with five minutes to go and after Conor McCarthy tacked on two points for the Skibb side, it was fitting Hodnett should have the final say with his sixth point from play, and his 10th in total.
