Grenagh’s great escape

Grenagh 1-15 Cloughduv 2-11
Grenagh were crowned Mid-Cork champions after a dramatic injury-time victory over Cloughduv at Ballincollig on Saturday night.

Injury-time points from the inspirational Tom Kenny and Seamus Coleman sparked wild celebrations. Although Cloughduv’s Sean O’Connor reduced the gap to a point deep into injury-time, his side couldn’t get an equaliser.

Grenagh led 0-9 to 1-4 at the break. A brilliant Kelvin Cummins penalty saw Grenagh hold a four-point lead early in the second half. But his side were reduced to 14 as Diarmuid Dorgan received a second yellow at the end of the third quarter.

Cloughduv reduced the gap to three points with a couple of Andrew Cronin frees. Yet Grenagh steadied and Kenny clipped over his fourth point of the second half to give his side a five-point lead with six minutes left.

From the resultant puckout, the sliotar found its way to Darragh Ring who neatly slipped inside the cover for a superb Cloughduv goal.

Minutes later, Ring reduced the gap to a point as Cloughduv piled on the pressure. But, as the tension mounted, Andrew Cronin comfortably slotted home an equalising free on the stroke of full time.

Grenagh responded with an excellent score from full-forward Seamus Coleman while man of the match Kenny fired a sweet strike from the wing.

Cloughduv brought it back to a point but saw a long-range effort go wide.

Grenagh captain and keeper Mark Kenny said: “We lost by a point last year and a goal the previous year. Our lads have worked so hard this year. Tom [Kenny] was magnificent while the contribution of coach Johnny Keane can’t be underestimated.”
