AN appeal by Kerry star Paul Galvin against an eight-week ban will be heard tonight by the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee at Croke Park.
Galvin, who was sent off along with Cork’s Eoin Cadogan by referee Maurice Deegan during the the recent Cork-Kerry Allianz NFL tie at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, has been granted a personal hearing.
Asked if he was confident of a successful outcome Kerry County Board Chairman Jerome Conway said yesterday “you can never be confident of these things. All you can do is put your case and hope for the best.”
The 2009 ‘Footballer of the Year’ received the ban as it was his second red card offence in a 48-week period having been sent off in last June’s Munster SFC semi-final replay, also against Cork.
If Galvin’s appeal is unsuccessful he will miss Kerry’s next four League games against Derry, Galway, Mayo and Tyrone but would be available for the game against Monaghan in Killarney on April 11.
Meanwhile former Galway skipper David Collins will start his first match in over two and a half years for the Tribesmen when he lines out against Waterford on Sunday.
The 2005 Young Hurler of the Year made a brief appearance late in the game against Limerick last weekend and starts on Sunday for a Galway side that shows five changes.
Collins comes into the side at wing-back in place of Kevin Hynes, with Iarla Tannian starting at corner-forward as Niall Hayes is released for All-Ireland club final duty for Portumna.
Galway continue their goalkeeper rotation policy with Colm Callanan getting the nod ahead of James Skehill, while Fergal Moore takes over from Pat Holland at corner-back, as Niall Healy returns in attack in place of the promising David Burke.
Clare are hopeful that corner backs Pat Vaughan and Gerry O’Grady will be passed fit to play against Laois at Portlaoise on Sunday.
