O’Mahony rescues draw for Youghal with late rally

A late Youghal resurgence, which saw them claw back a four-point deficit, ensured these will have to meet for a third time in the championship to decide who will progress to the semi-final.

Youghal were victors in early May in the opening round but it was Adrigole who had the lion’s share of possession in this contest.

The East Cork side didn’t register a score until the 19th minute of the first-half and failed to hit their first point of the second-half until the 50th minute.

Adrigole, by comparison, had lively forwards in Thomas O’Sullivan and Kevin Jer O’Sullivan — both executing excellent scores over the hour. Adrigole’s Brendan Jer O’Sullivan also continued his run of good form with an impressive display from his midfield berth and a brace for good measure.

Thomas O’Sullivan had kicked Adrigole’s first point after two minutes and followed it with a goal in the 4th minute — Sean O’Shea and David Harrington instrumental in the build-up.

Youghal hit three wides by the seventh minute and found themselves 1-3 to 0-0 behind when Kevin Goggin and Kevin Jer O’Sullivan kicked a free apiece.

Alan Frahill-O’Connor opened Youghal’s account in the 19th minute and points from James O’Mahony and Jonathon Ormonde brought them back into contention.

O’Connor turned provider for Paul Kelly who breached the Adrigole defence after collecting O’Connor’s neat pass and slotted the ball beyond William O’Sullivan to restore parity at 1-3 apiece in the 25th minute.

The sides exchanged points again before the half-time whistle to leave the score at 1-5 apiece with former Cork player Brendan Jer O’Sullivan’s monstrous free-kick a highlight.

Adrigole dominated the first 20 minutes of the second half, Thomas O’Sullivan again causing problems and his pin-point pass paved the way for a Kieran O’Sullivan for his point.

Three points followed, Kevin Jer, David Harrington and Thomas O’Sullivan all on target to increase their lead to 1-9 to 1-5. It should have been enough to see them over the line but Youghal’s James O’Mahony had other ideas.

The midfielder scored the all-important goal in the 55th minute, weaving past four Adrigole defenders in the process. He followed it with an injury time point to ensure the sides will have to do it all again.
