Longford blow as Foy injured

Experienced Longford defender Peter Foy looks set to miss most of the championship after breaking an ankle in a club match.

Foy, who transferred from Newtowncashel to Longford Slashers, will be out of action for several weeks. Manager Glenn Ryan, whose side begin their Leinster SFC campaign next Sunday against Wicklow in Aughrim, said that it was a bad blow.

“It is unfortunate for Peter but the main thing is for him to make a full recovery and get back in action,” said Ryan.

Longford were relegated from Division 2 in the league but Ryan said they prepared well since then for the championship opener.

“We played Carlow and Offaly and scored tight wins over them. Training has gone well. The league campaign was tough and was draining on everyone but that’s behind us now and we are looking forward to Sunday.

“We know it will be tough going to Aughrim but there has been a big effort since the league and we feel we are in with a good chance,” added the former Kildare player.
