Late drama as spot on Barry wins it for Clon

Clonakilty 1-9 Nemo Rangers 1-7
Nemo Rangers and Clonakilty served up a cracking Cork County U21AFC semi-final on a balmy evening in Bandon with the West Cork side edging a classic.

An absorbing contest played in sweltering heat ebbed and flowed before substitute Jack O’Donovan’s late goal looked to have won it for Nemo.

Clon looked dead and buried, down 1-7 to 0-8 on the stroke of full-time, before a penalty award handed them a lifeline.

Gearóid Barry stepped forward and coolly dispatched the ball to the net before J P Maughan sent over the insurance score to seal Clonakilty’s place in the decider against Valley Rovers.

Nemo Rangers wastefulness in front of goal cost them dear, missing a total of 17 chances and relying heavily on the scoring prowess of Luke Connolly.

Connolly pushed Nemo in front early on with the Cork U21 player’s deep-lying role causing plenty ofproblems for Clon.

The Carbery side were more than a match for Nemo thanks to Tom Clancy’s midfield dominance and Sean White’s surging runs. Clon drew level on the quarter hour thanks to a Clancy 45 and a superb effort from John Leahy.

It was nip and tuck until half-time with an outrageous Luke Connolly effort making it 5-3. Rangers wasted a few chances before a Jack O’Mahony free left Clonakilty a point behind at interval.

Clon dominated the second period with Clancy lording midfield and the Carbery champions surged ahead through Ian Falvey, John Leahy and Barry O’Mahony scores.

O’Donovan’s goal appeared to have won it for Nemo in the dying embers until Barry’s stepped up to slot the penalty home.
