Kerry stars inspire Brendan’s comeback

St Brendan’s College, Killarney 2-8PS Chorca Dhuibhne 1-9
Inspired by their two Kerry minors, Micheal Burns and Tony Brosnan, St Brendan’s College staged a thrilling second-half comeback at Austin Stack Park to deservedly reclaim the Kerry Colleges O’Sullivan Cup.

St Brendan’s, who denied Chorca Dhuibhne a three-in-a row, dominated the opening quarter, with Evan Cronin, Liam Kearney, Micheal Burns, Tony Brosnan and Paudie Clifford all showing well, but they shot five wides and a 1-2 to 0-2 lead was scant reward for their dominance.

Micheal Burns kicked two points (one free) while Cathal O Bambaire and Conor Geaney replied for Chorca Dhuibhne. But in the 14th minute, St Brendan’s struck for an opportunist goal when a Burns ’45 struck the crossbar and Brosnan was quickest to the rebound to score.

However, that was the Sem’s last score of the half, as Kerry minor Tomas Ó Sé’s introduction lifted Chorca Dhuibhne and they rattled off 1-5 without reply. Briain Ó Raoil raced through for a 21st-minute goal and Conor Geaney and Cathal Ó Bambaire added points as PS Chorca Dhuibhne led 1-7 to 1-2 at half-time. When Geaney increased their lead to six early in the second period, it looked to be curtains for the Sem.

However, the game changed dramatically in the 47th minute when Shane Cronin broke up a Chorca Dhuibhne attack and when the ball reached Burns, he set up Brosnan, who drilled the ball to the roof of the net.

Points followed from Burns, Evan Cronin and Darren O’Doherty and suddenly the sides were level (2-5 to 1-8) and the Sem reclaimed the lead with a 48th-minute beauty from Brosnan.

Cathal Ó Bambaire levelled but St Brendan’s finished strongly and points from Brosnan and Burns sealed a memorable win.
