Daly delight as Dubs regain scoring touch

Wexford 0-15 Dublin 3-19
Anthony Daly’s Dublin rediscovered their scoring touch in this one-sided Division 1B clash at Wexford Park, emerging with a comprehensive 13-point victory yesterday.

Dublin had Wexford’s backs to the wall early on and led 1-8 to 0-3 after 20 minutes. They went on to build a commanding 14-point interval lead and, such was their composure and control, there was never the remotest chance of the Model County staging a second-half recovery.

“We gave away so many chances last week that it was a positive response from the players,” said Daly. “But for Liam Dunne and Wexford it’s a work in progress. We as a management are there five years, which leaves us in a strong position. But this was a league game, so no doubt they will have a much hotter reception for us come championship on June 8. We are back in the promotion race, but we still have Carlow, who have been surprising many with the challenges to date. We will not be treating them lightly.”

For Liam Dunne, his side’s league aspirations are over.

“It shows where we are, and exactly where we have to go to achieve a championship result. We were unable to keep in touch in the first-half which made the second period difficult for us. We have to learn from this and drive on.”

When it mattered most through the opening 35 minutes, Dublin’s half-back line of Michael Carton, Liam Rushe and Shane Durkin stepped up to the mark, while Joey Boland was dominant in midfield and, with inside forwards David O’Callaghan, Conor McCormack and David Treacy running riot, they ensured the result was a foregone conclusion by the interval.
