Campion fires Fermoy to north-Cork derby win

James Campion fired Fermoy to victory over rivals Glanworth in a tense Cork IFC clash at Castletownroche on Saturday evening.

Campion hit 1-3 as Fermoy led from the outset while their opponents struggled for scores throughout an entertaining tie.

Campion and Ronan O’Callaghan had early points for the winners before Pierre O’Driscoll opened the Glanworth account from a free.

But even at this early stage, Fermoy looked the better side with Jeff Daly, Alan O’Connor, Brian O’Sullivan, Eoin Clancy and Jack Hutchings all impressing.

Darragh O’Carroll edged the winners three points clear after nine minutes before Clancy set up Ruairi O’Hagan for a point.

Dave Pyne’s converted 45’ narrowed the gap before Campion again was on target for the winners. Glanworth’s best move of the match came in the 27th minute when Philip Blackburne, John Magnier, Ger O’Neill and Michael Sheehan combined well for Diarmuid Colfer but his stinging effort was saved by Ivan O’Callaghan at the expense of a 45 which Pyne converted. Fermoy’s Alan O’Callaghan had the final say of the first half and his point left three between the sides (0-7 to 0-4) at the break.

Fermoy went 0-8 to 0-5 clear at the three quarter stage, with Campion prominent for them. Hutchings extended their lead again before O’Driscoll and Michael Sheehan cut the gap to two points (0-9 to 0-7).

But the game was put beyond doubt when Campion slammed to the net after good work by Kieran Morrison and Brian O’Sullivan.

Denis Gallagher and O’Driscoll had consolation scores for the losers who face Killavullen in the second round.
