Against last year’s junior champions, an experienced Aghada side were in control for long periods and manager Richie Lewis was delighted with his side’s performance.
“We made several changes from the side that saw off Barryroe in the first round and those that came in took their chance, so there are plenty of places up for grabs in the next game. But we have a lot to work to do, as we left Castlemartyr back into the game in the second half.”
Aghada made the better start with a pointed free from William Leahy and one from play by Paudie Wall. Castlemartyr responded with quick points from Brian Twomey and Eddie Clifford to tie the scores for the only time in the match after eight minutes.
Two points from Leahy and another by Wall edged Aghada ahead but two pointed frees by Barry Lawton kept Castlemartyr in touch at the end of the first quarter.
Castlemartyr were to go 20 minutes without another score as Aghada moved up a gear, scoring 2-5 in the final ten minutes of the half to lead 2-10 to 0-4 at half-time.
Their first goal came in the 21st minute when John Looney and Charlie Terry combined at a sideline cut to set up Timmy Hartnett who blasted the sliothar to the net.
Three minutes before the break, John Looney got their second goal after being played in by Cian Fleming.
Castlemartyr came more into the game in the second half as they ran at the Aghada defence.
Points from Barry Lawton, Brian Smiddy, Cian Haines and Barry Twomey closed the gap, but wayward shooting from distance cost them dearly.
A penalty from Barry Lawton four minutes from time gave Castlemartyr hope of a late revival, as the gap slimmed to five points. But an excellent Aghada defence, in which David Rice and Jake O’Donoghue were outstanding, snuffed out any comeback.
