Egan rescues Brendan’s

St Brendan’s, Ardfert 0-12 Causeway 1-09

On Friday night Lixnaw and Kilmoyley couldn’t be separated at Austin Stack Park, Tralee and less than 24 hours later a John Egan point rescued the day for St Brendan’s in their last four tussle with Causeway.

This game was an improvement on the first semi-final but in terms of intensity and championship fervour, it was scarce on quality and scores.

Causeway will be furious at failing to advance, failing to utilise their first half wind advantage and hitting nine wides as they led by a meagre 1-4 to 0-5 at the interval.

Causeway may have erred in not bringing in veteran John Mike Dooley for the opening half, as they lacked a target man.

All Causeway had to show for the opening half was, two Paul McGrath frees, two points from play by Darren Leahy and a superbly worked 21st minute goal, when Colm Harty placed Kerry minor Keith Carmody to blast home.

St Brendan’s did not open their account until the 13th minute when John Egan converted the first of his four opening half frees, with Cian Hussey getting the other, after a Tim Hannafin ’65 dropped short.

It was only when Egan was brought out around midfield that St Brendan’s changed the momentum of the game in a ten minute spell before half time. St Brendan’s must have fancied their chances in the second half, and after an early McGrath free, they took over and three more Egan points, two from play by Thomas Moloney and another from Darran Wallace saw St Brendan’s lead 0-11 to 1-6 before Causeway called for Dooley. He made an immediate impact as St Brendan’s dropped Darran Dineen back to double-team him, and Causeway started winning ball in the middle before McGrath landed two points to level the game. When Darren Leahy pointed in the 59th minute it looked if Causeway had staged a dramatic comeback, but a minute into injury time, Egan landed the equaliser and there was time for no more.
