Dunboyne shake off brave Bantry

Dunboyne (Meath) 1-10 Bantry Blues (Cork) 1-3: They will enjoy this one but new All-Ireland ladies’ junior club football champions, Dunboyne, already have their eyes set on bigger prizes.

Faster, stronger and with more football than Bantry Blues in Saturday’s All-Ireland decider at a rain-lashed Gaelic Grounds in Limerick, Dunboyne swept their way to an impressive victory, inspired by player of the match Vikki Wall. The Meath minor scored 1-6, including a crucial goal near the end of the first half that gave Dunboyne the edge — they led 1-3 to 0-1 at half-time.

Any hopes of a Bantry comeback were hurt in the third quarter as Dunboyne established a strong 1-8 to 0-2 lead, as Shelly Melia (who setup Wall’s goal), Ann-Marie Moffatt, Aoife Thompson (free) and Wall (2) had the Meath side in firm control.

Libby Coppinger had pulled a point back early in the half and Aoife O’Driscoll’s 56th-minute goal raised Bantry’s hopes briefly (1-8 to 1-2), but the West Cork side missed too many chances on the day.

Vikki Wall, deservingly, had the final say with two points that sandwiched a Rachel Murphy effort for Bantry. Dunboyne manager Martin Laffoy is already looking ahead to bigger and better things in the coming years.

“If this team stays together, they can achieve whatever they want to achieve. There are more All-Irelands in this team.

“Next year we will go for the intermediate championship and give that a right go.”
