It’s hard to believe that this elegant Victorian property on Clancy Strand in Limerick was once at the centre of the city’ s most ferocious Civil War battle – but it still has bullet holes on the front wall to prove it.
In July 1922 Republican forces occupied the building alongside it, Strand Barracks, and held out against an attack by Free State Forces for five days.
“Some of the Republicans tunneled their way in to this house and defended their position from the front windows upstairs before climbing over the back wall and escaping,’’ reveals the current owner of Cuana Keen who purchased in 2003.
Although the bullet holes on the front wall are still shown to passing tour groups, it is the for sale sign which recently went up on the late 19th century house which is now set to attract most attention.
According to Diarmuid Madigan of M&C Property, this is “the finest example of a Victorian period residence to come on the open market in Limerick in recent years.’’ Seeking offers of €750,000 for the 3,300 sq ft property, he says opportunities to buy something of this calibre in this location are rare.
End of terrace, in a row of three highly individualistic redbrick properties, it dates from the 1890s and is believed to have at one time belonged to the Mayor of Limerick.
With more than a colourful history and an elegant Victorian exterior to recommend it, Cuana Keen also has a tastefully renovated interior as well as a sought-after waterfront location within a 10-minute walk from the city centre.
When the current owners bought and renovated it, the house had already been extended.
“Some of the rooms were dark so we opened it up to the light by putting in doorways and some larger windows,” says the owner who put a large front feature window in the attic. From this there are unobstructed views of the river Shannon.
“We can see across to St John’s Castle, the Courthouse and out on to the trees in the park across the road — in winter, when the trees are bare, we can see the Hunt Museum.’’
On the inside the property has maintained some original features and has ten foot high ceilings with cornicing and windows with original shutters.
