Sympathetically restored The Old Forge near Cappoquin is pretty as a picture

Trish Dromey says a cottage in Cappoquin on the market for €190,000 is cute and colourful and has unparalleled valley views.

WITH red window planters, whitewashed walls, neat roof thatching and colourful gardens, The Old Forge near Cappoquin is pretty enough to attract the attention of snap-happy tourists who pass by.

Probably built in the 1800, it was once a forge but is now an attractive two-bed cottage which has been sympathetically restored.

The current owner is a German historian who has looked after the interior well and has kept the gardens looking colourful.

There’s 1,100sq ft of living space including a tiled lounge with a timber paneled ceiling and original fireplace fitted with a stove. There’s also a traditional looking kitchen with a dresser as well as a living room, a bathroom and two bedrooms.

At one side there’s a thatched stone outbuilding for storing timber and garden tools.

Set on a site of an acre and a half, the property has flower and shrub filled gardens at the rear as well as extensive green areas bounded by mature trees. Adding to the colour provided by pink roses and purple rhododendrons is a red gate with a “Danger Bull” sign, which apparently came with the cottage.

Seeking offers of €190,000, Sherry FitzGerald Reynolds say this is a gorgeous, scenically located property. “The approach to the cottage has unrivalled views of the valley and the meeting of the waters of the picturesque River Blackwater with its tributary the River Bride,’’ says auctioneer Cormac Curran adding that the location is popular with anglers and boating enthusiasts.

VERDICT: Cute and colourful summer cottage
