A favourite haunt of artists, Achill Island sets the scene for an auction on Sunday. Des O’Sullivan reports.

The West will be awake to the sound of “going, going, gone...” on Sunday when Dolan’s will hold an art auction at Dooagh on Achill Island.

Not a usual venue for such a sale — in fact, Dolan’s believe it will be the first-ever art auction on an island beloved by generations of Irish artists — but the Galway-based art auction house is taking a punt on the Achill venue, and hoping attendance will be swollen by summer visitors to the far west.

And why not? Dolan’s have been holding successful August bank holiday sales in Connemara for a number of years, the latest at Ballyconneely last Saturday and Monday.

The sale on Sunday includes a number of Achill landscapes and views of western landmarks such as the Lake Isle of Innisfree by a variety of artists using differing styles.

The 246 lots on offer include collectibles, antique furniture, porcelain and rugs but is primarily composed of artworks.

There is an oil on canvas of Dooagh Village by Desmond Turner RUA and the painting Atlantic Moonlight by Carina Scott in a contrasting style.

An interior scene from Newport House in Co Mayo by John Brobbel is meticulously rendered as are a number of Achill scenes by Robert Egginton. Bogpools by the Cork artist Patrick Hennessy is another work of interest.

There are Achill views by Alexander Williams and Maurice Wilks and Connemara scenes by artists like Charles Lamb, Cecil Maguire, Sean McSweeney, John Morris, Annemarie Bourke and Douglas Alexander.

The sale features art by Mildred Anne Butler, Mark O’Neill, Arthur Maderson and a classical artist’s proof print of cottages in the west by Paul Henry.
