Antique furniture and objects of interest at Lynes and Lynes

Des O’Sullivan looks at some of the lots on offer at Lynes and Lynes and finds great value Georgiana.

AN Irish Georgian long case clock by William Maddock of Waterford and a telescopic Georgian dining table are among the prime lots at the Lynes and Lynes sale in Carrigtwohill next Saturday. Each is estimated at €3,000-5,000.

The selection on offer includes a seascape by Edwin Hayes (€1,000-1,500), a c1860 Chinese cabinet with lacquered panels (€2,000-4,000), a set of Cork 11-bar dining chairs (€1,500-2,000), a large wing back armchair (€1,000-1,500) and an antique cast iron garden seat (€1,000-1,500).

Auctioneer Denis Lynes reports that there is already interest in a Georgian sofa table (€400-600). Also typical of Cork furniture are lots 255 and 256, a pair of hall chairs and a cellarette on a tripod base.

Each has a low estimate of €100-200. Other lots include a pair of rare official standard brass pint measures (€100-200), a neat Georgian window or hall seat (€200-400), a 19th century couch (€200-400), an Irish Georgian stool with needlework drop in seat (€600-800) and a pair of old terracotta chimney pots (€40-80).

There are GAA programmes and medals, a Guy’s Munster Directory, an abstract polished steel sculpture, an oil on canvas by Anthony Ruby entitled The Jolly Gluttons and a silk screen limited edition Led Zeppelin ‘Stairway to Heaven print’.

The auction is drawn from a variety of sources including Verulam on Sunday’s Well, which has been my home for the past 30 years. We are downsizing.

Viewing for this auction is from 10 am to 8 pm next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Vermeer exhibition and Adam’s auction

Show explores relationships between Vermeer and Dutch genre painters from 1650 to 1675

The Vermeer exhibition now underway at the refurbished National Gallery of Ireland brings together as many as ten works by the artist.

This represents almost a third of his surviving oeuvre and is the third highest number of works by Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) ever assembled.

The not-to-be-missed show explores the relationships between Vermeer and Dutch genre painters from 1650 to 1675. It runs until September 17. Booking is essential.

Meantime the final auction of the season at James Adam takes place tomorrow.

The ‘At Home’ sale features some choice Oriental works from the estate of Anne Bullitt who died a decade ago aged 83.

Among them are a Japanese six-fold screen and a Chinese Tang-style glazed horse and rider.
