Art and antique market to grow with housing market

IF THE housing market moves can the market for art and antique furniture be far behind? When more people can buy houses, the antique market grows too. Though the focus is often on the better, more expensive pieces, auctions offer a very economical alternative way of furnishing a house, apartment or rooms.

Art is another great value way to create a furnished look. The annual end of term degree shows at art colleges offer an opportunity to buy work by trained graduates just starting out. If you missed out on that this year never fear.

As part of its longstanding commitment to the arts in Cork, a show of art by recent graduates of the Crawford opens at The Lavit Gallery next Tuesday evening and runs until September 26.

The annual Fledglings exhibition of selected graduates will be opened by Catherine Fehily, head of CIT Crawford College of Art and Design.

There is work in a variety of media from a cross section which includes work by the artist known as Jim, Dana Dempsey; Conor Callery; Cian Carroll; Alexis Campbell-Bannerman; Charity Ewamiekhobore; Amanda Lynch; Ciara McCarthy; Helen O’Shea; Sarah O’Leary; Francesca Castellano; Wilhelmina van der Bent and Sarah Roseingrave.

Jim is an artist whose work explores perception through light, Amanda Lynch’s paintings deal with rural Ireland and the work of Ciara McCarthy examines the role of women within the porn industry.

There is sculpture from Cian Carroll, Helen O’Shea and Sarah Roseingrave. Carroll works predominantly with sheet aluminium, O’ Shea uses found and reused material to draw attention our disposable habits and Roseingrave makes raku fired vessels.

Exploring traditional decorative art and design, Charity Ewamiekhobore creates forms to evoke a sense of repetition of patterns. Alexis Campbell Bannerman’s drawings are inspired by the writings of Nietzsche, Dada, Christine Battersby and the images of Goya’s Los


Dana Dempsey’s embossed drawings are created by the use of glue and plastics, to create delicately beautiful subtle abstracts. There are installation pieces by Conor Callery and Francesca Castellano, photographic works by Wilhelmina van der Bent and landscape light boxes by Sara O’Leary.
