Gallery: This Ballincollig home is perfect for those who hate cutting grass

It may not quite live up to its name — where are the greens? — but this home shines, says Tommy Barker.

There’s one obvious thing missing at 2 The Green, within Ballincollig’s Aylsbury: A green lawn or expanse of green grass.

Instead, this corner-set detached family home has a wide and wedge-shaped paved front drive, a fully paved back garden with lots of statuary, eating and seating options, and a fenced side garden, tarmacked, with gated access for a car, or for a fleet of cars, as well as having a steel storage shed, which is free of the usual necessity of having to store a lawnmower.

No 2 The Green is deep within Aylsbury, on the western flanks of Ballincollig, near Classis, where there’s quite a broad mix of detached homes, some dating right back to the 1970s, but The Green’s rather a later arrival.

And, now No 2 has arrived on the property market, guided at €430,000 by estate agent Norma Healy of Sherry FitzGerald, who says it’s spacious, well kept, bright, and well finished, and ideal for those looking for something just a bit special or that bit more different.

No 2’s well laid out, with a good balance of rooms on two levels coming to over 1,450 sq ft, and then there’s a couple of converted attic rooms and a further bathroom also on top and into the mix.

The two-storey — plus attic — detached build has a setback section, and off its hall, via a hardwood and glazed door with glazed side panel, is the main reception room. 

It has an open fireplace and a double set of glazed hardwood doors to the bright, porcelain-tiled 30’ wide and 12’ deep dining room and kitchen.

The aspect to the paved back garden is south-west, units have black granite tops, there’s an array of integrated appliances, and there’s plumbing in place for a gas fire, currently concealed behind a dresser.

Ground-floor accommodation is added to by a utility room, guest WC, and a front play room/study.

Stairs in the hall are carpeted, leading to four mid-sized bedrooms on the first floor, one of which is en suite. The main family bathroom is fully tiled, with a long counter top by the sink, and lots of storage underneath.

Externally, the back is where No 2’s differences really come to the fore, with extensive paving in sandstone and brick pavers. There are raised beds in brick also; one houses a naturalistic statue of beavers on a log with surround planting.

There are other raised beds and at the back boundary stands a tall, curved stone feature wall with stainless steel water spout, with stag statue on top.

Also a bit of a stand-out feature is a standalone garden oven with chimney for barbecues, open-flame grilling, and other al fresco cooking tasks.

The boundary walls have ivies and red robinia softening the hard finishes, and the area’s further divided into sections with tall lighting posts, a patio dining area, and a stone sofa-like seat.

VERDICT: No 2 The Green is a perfect fit for those who hate cutting grass.
