You might go a bit adrift, on a first trip at least, out to Ballyglass, Grenagh to this dormer home up for sale, but as any local will tell you, the roads quickly become very familiar.
As do the landmarks, and from the vastly-extended sun room of this family home a 20-minute spin from Cork city you can see the Nagle mountains, the Boggeraghs, out to Bweeng, back to Donoughmore and even Blarney, and the night-time glow of Cork city’s lights are to the south also.
And, it’s back to Cork that the family who’ve been in occupation here since 2002 are headed, having moved here to rural idyll from jobs in London to rear a family.
With two of their three children coming to college-going age, and with their own jobs back in the city, they’ve decided to sell up and move back to the city, where regretfully they know they’ll get a whole lot less of a home for what their own home will fetch.
In very smart condition, and with a 400 sq ft sun-room with four overhead Veluxes added on in 2006, and complete with feature wood-pellet stove at its core, their Ballyglass four-five-bed detached home is guided at €365,000 by Fiona Waldron of Jeremy Murphy Associates.
That sort of sum will buy a good semi-d in Cork’s suburbs, but go off the beaten track a tad (well, five miles off the N20 to Mallow, or three from Grenagh in truth) and your €365k sum will get you this detached house, about 1,000 sq ft larger than the average semi, on its own serviced site of two-thirds of an acre with immense distance views, and all in mint condition.
It’s near The Farm restaurant and schools in Grenagh, and has a school bus service too, and there’s a good cluster of family homes in the hinterland, while the owners say the decision to move wasn’t an easy one.
And, adds estate agent Fiona Walsdon, they’re house proud, and that’s in evidence here in every room and detail.
There’s that great sun room, a double aspect living-room with powerful open fireplace, a home office or ground floor bed five, updated dining room/kitchen with banks of units and long runs of worktops with range cooker, dishwasher etc, plus there’s a utility alongside, with a newly-fitted oil central heating boiler, and triple zoning.
Upstairs are four more bedrooms with views, one with extensively tiled en suite, family bathroom and walk-in hotpress and it has Sky TV, phone and broadband, plus alarm.
VERDICT: Not so far off the beaten track.
Best Feature: Lots of high-end space for price of a city semi-d
