Extension at Bon Secours granted

The proposed extension of facilities at the Bon Secours Hospital in Cork city has been approved.

It follows an application in February of this year to Cork City Council for six floors of hospital accommodation to the north of the existing facility, currently accessed from College Road near University College Cork.

That proposal also featured plans to allow traffic access the site from Western Road to the north of the hospital site, with a new two-lane bridge over the River Lee also included in the application. After responding to city planners’ request in March for further information, Bon Secours Health System Ltd has now been granted permission subject to 13 conditions.

* Planning approval has been granted for a heritage centre on a former convent and school in Cork’s south inner city.

In the application last March, permission was sought for the changes at the South Presentation school grounds on the site bounded by Douglas Street, Abbey Street, Nicholas Street and Evergreen Street. Following a response last month to a request for further information, the plans have now been cleared by Cork City Council.

South Presentation Centre Limited’s proposal for the site of less than three acres includes demolition of old toilet blocks, and the change of use of parts of the convent building and the former primary school to an archive facility. It is also planned to change the use of a 19th-century chapel to provide a heritage centre with new roof glazing to the church courtyard.

A four-storey building for third level educational use is also included in the plans, as well as a garden café. Existing ministry and residential uses would be retained in parts of the convent buildings, with the tomb (inset) of Nano Nagle — founder of the Presentation sisters — to be relocated as part of alterations to the existing graveyard.

* Conditions relating to height and traffic safety are attached to recent permission for a major office development on Cork’s Albert Quay.

After withdrawing earlier plans which were under third-party appeal to An Bord Pleanála, BAM Property and developer John Cleary’s firm Progressive Commercial Construction Ltd lodged revised proposals for the south quays site at the end of April. It replaced the earlier nine-storey development — for which permission was granted by Cork City Council previously — with an eight-storey scheme, as well as other changes.

The council has granted permission in late June, with no appeals recorded to date in relation to that decision. Among the 14 conditions that were attached to the approval was one which requires the reduction by one floor of the eight-storey ‘corner feature’ of the building, by the omission of either the sixth or seventh floor.

It is also being required of the applicants to commission an independent road safety audit to examine arrangements for entry and exit to the car park.

The council has also given Progressive Commercial Construction approval for change of use of the former Shanakiel Hospital on Cork’s northside.

The application lodged in March by the firm sought permission to change the use to residential or to a medical consulting facility, after demolition of part of the former hospital. The plans also proposed restoring the original Shanakiel House, which is a protected structure, to a self-contained building.

* Cork City Council has given the go-ahead to a McDonald’s restaurant on part of the Musgrave Park rugby grounds in Ballyphehane.

The decision earlier this week came on foot of a response from McDonald’s Restaurants of Ireland to planners’ further information request last January. The company applied to the council last November to develop the single-storey outlet on a one-acre site bounded by Tramore Road and Kinsale Road.

The council had asked for a revised traffic assessment and reduced parking provision from the applicants before granting permission.

Plans for a small housing scheme near Cobh have been lodged with Cork County Council.

In an application last month, Compass Homes is seeking permission to build 18 homes, to include two-storey and three-storey houses, each with four bedrooms. The plans relate to a site of over two-and-a-half acres at Belmont Huts, Carrignafoy.
