Cobh home comes with its own tower and unique history

Trish Dromey on a Victorian delight

Cobh, Co Cork - €210,000

Size: Sq m 119 (1,287 sq ft)
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 2

You don’t need to buy a castle to get a tower —this 19th Century end of terrace house at 1 Park Terrace in Cobh has one which provides views and a bit of history.

Part of a redbrick terrace built in 1880 by a wealthy shipping merchant, the property was subsequently used for rent collection by the agent of the Smith Barry family, the owners of large estates which included Fota Island.

Larger than its neighbours, No 1 is the only house with a tower and which has an entrance on both Park Road and Park Lane. When the current owners did some research, they discovered the turret was used as a lookout to ensure the safety of the agent and the rent money. They also found out that the tenants used to come in through the on-street entrance at Park Lane and leave through the door on Park Road.

New to the market, with a guide of €210,000, the property has maintained its redbrick Victorian exterior but modernised on the inside. Helen Kearney of CCM Auctioneers says it was rewired, re plumbed and re roofed in 2013 and is now in good condition.

Offering almost 1,300 sq ft of living space, the house has a kitchen with fitted units, a downstairs bedroom and a guest WC. There’s also a lean-to conservatory used as a dining area as well as a long, timber floored sitting/dining room with a bay window and a marble fireplace, which is possibly original.

Upstairs there’s a bathroom and two bedrooms and above it a square tower room which is now used for the water tank. It has a high round-headed window which offers views across the rooftops to the cathedral and the harbour.

Fitted with double glazing and oil central heating, the property has an F BER rating.

On street at the front, it has an enclosed paved garden and one, off street parking space at the rear.

Verdict: will appeal to first time buyers and people looking for a uniqu home with a bit of history.
