The detached, two/three-bed home at 41 Clover Hill estate is notable for several things, but most of all for its previous hospitality, and its musical soirees, as it was the private home of one of Ireland’s leading pianists and composers, John Gibson.

Dublin-born John Gibson, who passed away last year aged 65 after a debilitating illness, has at least 90 enduring compositions to his credit, including chamber pieces, psalms, madrigals, opera and film/documentary scores.

He taught theory at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and after moving to Cork in 1982 taught piano at the Cork School of Music for 29 years, and from where he retired in 2012.

He also performed internationally, recorded, and has accompanied the National Symphony Orchestra, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the RTÉ Vanbrugh String Quartet among others. His output includes a number of commission pieces, including one Christ Church Music for Cork City Council in 2011, to mark the rebirth of Christchurch at Triskel Arts Centre.

John Gibson also practiced and played piano consistently, at this suburban Cork property where, if the walls could talk, they’d also sing, chime and hum.

Unmarried, his home with sun room extension was known for social gatherings of friends, and colleagues and fellow musicians, meals, wine and entertainment and, now, is for sale as part of his estate.

No 41 Clover Hill Lawn is set just off Cork’s Skehard Road, in a modern c 1980s development between ‘old’ Blackrock and ‘new,’ booming Mahon with its shops, offices and expanding amenities. Yet, it is quietly set off the main linking thoroughfares, behind Scallys SuperValu and other local services, on a well-serviced bus route and a walk from Blackrock village via Church Road, or via the Ursuline Convent grounds.

A gable-fronted brick and dash bungalow and just shy of 1,300 sq ft, No 41 Clover Hill Lawn is guided at €265,000 by estate agent James Cogan of ERA Downey McCarthy, who says that new owners could come from a wide background, be they singles, couples, starting out families or traders-down.

It has two first floor bedrooms plus bathroom, and at ground is a long living room, triple aspect sun room, kitchen with gloss and maple units, shower room, compact home office/bed three, with two dormer bedrooms and bathrooms with bath and overhead shower upstairs.

It has simple gardens front, side and back and the rear patio is west facing. Overall condition is excellent, but some windows may need replacing with double glazing, and heating is a mix of open fireplaces and electric storage heaters.

VERDICT: Well composed, No 41’s next owners will just have to shake their newly-acquired doorkeys to follow, more musically modestly, in its previous owner’s illustrious footsteps and keyboard fingersteps.
