Tommy Barker visits a recently-refreshed home in the lovely East Cork village of Whitegate.
THERE’S a lovely end-of-the-road feel to Whitegate in Cork harbour... go much beyond the water-fronting village and the roads seem to narrow to a point.
The busiest, which is almost always quiet, leads to the sentinel lighthouse at Roches Point, witness to more than one or two shipwrecks in its day, yet able to claim on balance that it has kept safe many thousands of seafarers’ lives.
Oh, and apart from a pivotal role in Ireland’s petroleum and energy supplies, Whitegate is also the service centre of Trabolgan Holiday Village, which means holiday makers on the doorstep nine months of the year.
(The age profile of Trabolgan’s fun-seekers is likely to alter a bit next month, the weekend of April 13-15, when it hosts the inaugural and innovative It Takes a Village festival of music, art and more, able to accommodate 1,200 concert attendees in full, roofed-over residential comfort. No tents, no loo queues, and all the attractions are open for weekend visitors, from abseiling to zip-lining as well as pool parties with DJs and a wave machine, and historical headland walks: bliss for rockers and strollers who’ve now got creakier bones to mind.)
For those not going into middle age lightly, another local Whitegate attraction may be 1 Middle Road, a just revamped and reinvigorated detached family home within a walk of the village, and which was briefly up for sale last spring.
Now, it’s come back to market, better than before, and guided at just €10k over its 2017 market offering.
Since then, it has been reconfigured, and now has a fourth bedroom, the en-suite master bedroom now has mirrored sliding robes, and all bathrooms are redone with new tiling and upgraded sanitary ware for a more modern, contemporary, feel than you’d expect in a 2004-built home.
Estate agent James Colbert in Midleton now guides the walk-in condition Whitegate home, with its distinctive blue picket front garden fence, at €285,000 and comments that all the recent upgrades and alterations “only improve an already perfect family home.”
There’s a good standard of decor throughout, with an understated maritime air and boat and beach scenes on the walls, while the kitchen’s oak-topped island unit is also in the same sort of jaunty blue as the picket fence by the front door, contrasting with the gleam of pure white subway splashback tiles.
Heating is delivered underfloor downstairs, with rads upstairs in the four wood-floored bedrooms, and there’s a wood-floored hall, two front reception rooms, and full width (c 25’ wide) kitchen/dining with rear garden access on one side, and opening to one of the reception rooms on the other: there’s is a good feel and flow to the house as a result, says Mr Colbert.
There’s also a utility room, and an example of forward thinking is the plumbing allowance made in the guest WC so that a shower can be simply installed at a later date, if needed or wished for.
Externally, No 1 Middle Road has lawned front garden next to a drive able to take two cars.
Behind, the garden is laid to artificial astroturf, with play equipment, while the combined parish of Aghada and Whitegate has a good range of sports and outdoor activities, pitches and tennis club, pier and boating and kayaking options.
VERDICT: Ready to rock.
