Was it the night Neymar elevated himself alongside Messi on the Barcelona pantheon. Dermot Corrigan guages the local reaction to one of the greatest occasions in the club’s storied history.

“For a club that’s been all about Messi, this is a big turnaround.”

He considers the scale of the feat, the impact it will have on the club’s legend, and the implications for seemingly departing manager Luis Enrique.

In the Madrid media, however, they are less unanimous in their exuberance. In AS, it was called it a “a comeback with objections”, noting the generosity of the two Barca penalty awards and the one Paris Saint Germain were denied when Javier Mascherano tripped Angel di Maria.

“I took him down. I took the risk,” Mascherano confirmed to the Spanish media.

Liam Mackey, meanwhile, prefers to focus on how Barcelona maintained their belief and continued to play their football.

“In the overall context of what Barcelona did, those issues are so much beside the point, in terms of the scale of the achievement that it’s almost churlish to bring them up as talking points.

“For me it’s a story of romance and joy and a reminder of why this is the greatest sport in the world.

“I can see why football people all over the world were standing up and screaming all over the world. I was doing it myself.”
