Weld on a High

DERMOT WELD’S Natural High can land the nap in the T.I.R.D Chamber Of Commerce Maiden at Tipperary this evening.

Natural High may be a four-year-old, but his year younger opponents, from where you would normally expect the winner to come, seem very moderate and the Sadler’s Wells gelding is fancied to deliver.

His only appearance to date came at the Galway Festival in early August, when contesting a bumper.

The selection was strongly fancied and didn’t disappoint. He travelled sweetly throughout and was set for an easy victory approaching the final furlong.

Natural High, however, then swerved away to his left, before Robbie McNamara straightened him out to score easily enough in the end by a length and a half.

Weld also has prospects with Bygone Age and Simon Bolivar. Bygone Age is no great shakes thus far, but at least showed testing conditions held no fear for him when fourth behind Song Of My Heart at the Curragh.

Purple Heart, third to Sebastian Flyte and Mister Tee at Gowran Park, has easily the best form, but did not seem an easy ride on that occasion!

Simon Bolivar has a lot to prove as well, but the race he is set to contest, the Glenvale Stud Auction Maiden, is a particularly weak heat.

This fellow was out of contention after a furlong at Galway last time, behind Puncher Clynch, but was doing all his best work at the end to take sixth and may reverse placings with Fuerta Miramar, who claimed third spot.

Feature event is the Listed Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Fairy Bridge Stakes and the nod here falls on Latin Love.

She is progressing and was far disgraced when ultimately outclassed by Chinese White at the Curragh.

The fact Johnny Murtagh, who was in the plate renews acquaintances, in preference to Totally Devoted, has to be regarded as significant.
