Wrestling champ makes Dáire’s day

Young Dáire Gorman had the best day ever this week as he got to meet his hero, Irish wrestling superstar Sheamus from World Wrestling Entertainment.

Wrestling champ makes Dáire’s day

Dáire has Crommelin Syndrome, a condition that affects only four people in the world. It means that Dáire, who is two-and-a-half years old, was born with no upper limbs and without a femur in both legs. Crommelin Syndrome is so unusual that little is known about it and the family have received very little medical support.

Dáire adores wrestling, in particular the world’s biggest wrestling company, WWE, and its stars happened to be in Dublin’s O2 Arena on the Irish date of their European tour. Along with his dad, Kenny, and his cousin, Jamie, Dáire loves to watch his favourite stars, such as John Cena, Roman Reigns, and Ireland’s own Sheamus smash it up in the ring.

Hearing about Dáire’s amazing story last year, RTÉ’s Ryan Tubridy organised tickets for him to see his WWE heroes. It was then that mum Shelly turned detective. Shelly managed to figure out that the wrestlers would be staying in Dublin’s Spencer Hotel and contacted the events manager, Emma Horan, in the hope of making Dáire’s dream of meeting his heroes come true.

Through the Make A Wish foundation, Emma organised a get-together between current US champion Sheamus and Dáire during the intermission of last night’s show.

Sheamus (Stephen Farrelly) hails from Dublin and is a three-time WWE and World Heavyweight champion, the highest position a WWE wrestler can achieve.

Shelly, from Dunraymond in Monaghan, told breakingnews.ie that Sheamus was brilliant with Dáire.

“He was fantastic, he was so sweet to Dáire, asking how he was and posing for pictures,” said Shelly. “He even signed the armbands he wears fighting for Dáire and gave them to him, along with a programme signed by all the wrestlers.”

Dáire wasn’t the only one to have a wish granted last night as eight-year-old Jessica Broady from Laois got to meet Sheamus as well.

Make A Wish foundation on 01-2052007.
