Web invite sees village overrun by drunk teens

A small East Cork village was overrun by drunken teens who arrived in throngs on Saturday night after a house party was advertised on the internet via social media websites.

Garda Supt John Quilter said well in excess of 200 teenagers arrived into the village in response to an invite that had spread from the internet.

“It attracted a large crowd. There were some public order issues and some arrests,” said Supt Quilter.

The problem posed by drunken teenagers congregating in the village was exacerbated by the fact that there was no public transport system to facilitate them leaving, he said.

He said gardaí had received a number of reports of damage being caused by the crowd. The revellers had travelled to Cloyne “from all over”, he said.

One retailer in the village who did not wish to be identified, described the scene as “crazy and really frightening for older people”.

“I never saw anything like it,” she said.

The woman said she had been told a bus had come from Youghal bringing young people to the house party which she thought may have taken place at rented accommodation in Cloyne.

“There was plenty of drinking going on, bottles in paper bags being swapped around, teens running into people’s back gardens,” the woman said.

Publican Eddie Harty of Harty’s Bar said he heard there was “a big crowd of youngsters in town for a birthday party” that had been posted on Twitter but he saw no damage on the streets.

Twitter and Facebook were rife with claims in relation to what took place in Cloyne on Saturday.

Posts on Facebook page Report a Crime in Cork said more than “200 teens tonight drinking in cloyne they kicked my door.... my tyre got slashed and windows had been smashed...”

One tweet described it as “a smash and run riot at the cross of Cloyne” and not a house party.

Supt Quilter warned people to defer from posting open invitations on websites.
