
Pope Francis — born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina — joined the Society of Jesus in 1958. He was ordained in 1969 at the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel, a Jesuit university and seminary in Buenos Aires.
