Mr Adams yesterday questioned why Murphy was not tried before a jury of his peers following his conviction.

The Irish Examiner yesterday repeatedly tried to contact every Sinn Féin TD and senator in order to see whether they agree with their party leader’s view that Murphy had been “treated unfairly”.

Many, including deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald, failed to respond to phone and text messages from us.

A number, however, did respond.

Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe said: “I agree with what he is saying about the Special Criminal Court. I think it should be abolished. I have long held that view and it was one of the parts of the Good Friday Agreement.

“I think Murphy has been treated unfairly, having been brought before the Special Criminal Court; bringing a tax case before the court is unprecedented. Some things that have happened in that court shows why we need a new legal case.”

Cork North Central TD Jonathan O’Brien said: “I don’t know Slab Murphy personally. I’ve never met the man. I don’t know too much about the man other than what I’ve read in the media.

“Your political opponents will seize on anything to undermine your own political project. Not to trivialise the issue, but I could easily turn around and point to people associated with Fine Gael and say maybe they should step away from them as well. But I don’t.”

Waterford senator David Cullinane concurred with Mr Adams and said that every citizen was entitled to a fair trial.

“I don’t know Tom Murphy, a man who is before the Special Criminal Court for not paying his taxes. To me that is unprecedented, unheard of. I agree with Gerry Adams that every citizen has a right to due process, to a fair defence, and to have their day under a fair legal system.

“In my view, every citizen has the right to be heard in court before a jury of their peers. That is due process. It is extraordinary that this case was brought before the Special Criminal Court.

“But let me be clear, I have no truck with anybody who doesn’t pay their taxes. Everybody should pay their taxes, everybody.”

Dublin North West TD Dessie Ellis and Sligo TD Michael Colreavy said they had no comment to make when contacted yesterday.
