Update: Gardaí arrested two men in their 30s in relation to a robbery at a post office in Little Island, Co Cork this morning.

Officers searching for two armed raiders who had allegedly threatened staff before escaping with some cash made arrests a number of hours later.

The men had entered the small post office at Trafford Park, Little Island at around 9.30am.

Gardaí said one of the men brandished what appeared to be a handgun and his accomplice was armed with an iron bar.

"They threatened staff and left the scene with a small sum of cash. No staff member was injured during the incident," gardaí confirmed.

They left the scene in a black 05 C-registered car, possibly a Ford Mondeo which reportedly had damage on either side of it.

The two suspects were arrested in the Glanmire area at approximately 2.30pm.

They were detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 and were being held in Mayfield and Gurranabraher Garda Stations.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information is asked to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021-452200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Little Island Business Association (LIBA) chief executive Michael Mulcahy said there were a lot of CCTV systems operating in the area which gardaí were able to access.

"It is quite rare that we have any serious incidents in Little Island because of the traffic situation and the numerous CCTV systems in operation," he said.

A number of companies and businesses, he said, also had security staff employed.
