A man became “so distracted” when a woman he took for a spin put her hand on his knee that he hit a bollard, overturned, and wrote off his car at a roundabout.

Neither party was seriously injured, but they both ended up in hospital, a court was told.

Mick Carroll, aged 39, of Kilbrean, Kilcummin, Killarney, Co Kerry, was summonsed before Killarney District Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention at Lissivigeen, Killarney on February 11, 2015.

The car had “flipped over”, the court was told.

Judge James O’Connor enquired what exactly happened and he was told Mr Carroll was distracted by a “lady friend” who was in the car with him.

Padraig O’Connell, solicitor, for Mr Carroll outlined how his client had only just met the “foreign lady”, that afternoon in Killarney. He believed the woman was from Latvia.

“She put her hand on his knee. She was a foreign lady. He wasn’t in the better of it,” the solicitor replied.

The judge asked: “Why didn’t she wait until after the roundabout?” However, Mr O’Connell said they had already gone “twice around the roundabout”.

“This gets better the more questions you ask!” Judge O’Connor said, enquiring if the woman was in court. She was not, was the reply.

Inspector Tony Sugrue agreed the vehicle was written off but the bollards were not badly damaged.

Carroll had a previous conviction under the public order act, the court was told.

He pleaded guilty to two further offences under the public order act yesterday — on August 13, 2015 of intoxication in a public place in Killarney and of abusive behaviour on July 30, 2015, also in Killarney.

The court imposed a conviction and fine of €500 on the road traffic offence with 10 months to pay and a further €150 on one of the public order offences.
