A post-mortem is to be carried out on the body of a man in his 30s pulled from the River Barrow in Co Kildare yesterday.

The man's body was recovered yesterday afternoon after a week-long search operation.

The man had gone missing after a kayaking accident on the river near Athy last Sunday, when a child was rescued.

The recovery was made following a search operation in the River Barrow involving multiple agencies including the Garda Water Unit, Civil defence and local volunteers.

At around 4pm, gardaí from the sub-aqua unit recovered the body from the water.

The body remained at the scene and the local coroner was notified after the discovery.

The examination is to take place at the mortuary in Naas.
