Mercedes has announced a new car — and it will be available in Ireland in a matter of weeks. The company has expanded to five the choice in their compact-car segment with the new, five-door CLA Shooting Brake.

It will be priced to attract people who may not have considered estate-car ownership, with launch models expected to begin from €31,490.

Styled as a coupé — but said to be endowed with the attributes of an estate — its visual appeal echoes that of the larger CLS Shooting Brake. Viewed from the front, its long, domed bonnet and diamond radiator grille, with large, inset star, combine to give it a sporty, crouching posture. From the side, its sleek, frameless windows, sweeping body and sloping roofline direct the eye to the rear and its robust bumper with twin exhausts, wide-opening tailgate and stylish light cluster.

Inside, headroom is 4cm higher than in the four-door version. Load compartment capacity extends from 495 to 1,354 litres.

Other interior features include a three-spoke steering wheel, seven-inch, freestanding screen in high-gloss piano finish, and an instrument panel with five round vents. In addition to the entry-level version, it will be available in two additional equipment lines — Urban and AMG.

Five Euro 6-compliant engines are available initially — two CDI diesel models and three petrol. All are equipped with ECO start/stop function.

The first diesel version is a €36,125, four-cylinder, 2.2-litre, 136bhp CLA200 CDI that delivers 4.1 l/100 km fuel consumption, and band A3 annual road tax of just €190. The second diesel is a €40,195, four-cylinder, 2.2-litre, 177bhp CLA220 CDI Automatic with 4.01 l/100 km consumption, and band A3 annual road tax of €190.

Petrol versions begin with a €31,490, four-cylinder, 1.6-litre, 122bhp CLA180 with 5.51 l/100 km consumption, and band B1 annual road tax of €270. Next comes a €35,235, four-cylinder, 1.6-litre, 156bhp CLA200 with 5.61 l/100km consumption, and band B1 road tax of €270. Third is a €45,045, four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, 211bhp CLA250 with 5.51 l/100km consumption, and band B1 annual road tax of €270.

Commenting on the new range, Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, said that the CLA Shooting Brake fills an important niche among that expanding segment of the market whose preference is for a car that has load-carrying capacity and scope for an active lifestyle.
