MOTORS & ME - ALYX COBY

Alyx Coby shows us the go-kart she uses  to race in the IAME X30 Junior class in the Motorsport Ireland Karting Championship.

What are you currently driving?

I race in the IAME X30 Junior class in the Motorsport Ireland Karting Championship.

What’s under the bonnet?

The kart has a 125cc two stroke engine with 28 horsepower. They do around 100 km/h.

How did you get involved in racing?

I started racing three years ago when I was eight. I wanted to race since I was very little. My dad, Gary, and my uncle Aaron both raced karts so I practically grew up at the track watching them. I was bound to end up racing!

How did you do last season?

I won three finals last season and set the fastest lap in six races. I also finished in 5th place in the Championship.

What is your favourite karting track?

Watergrasshill in Cork.

Dream race in dream location?

This year I hope to race at LeMans in France in the IAME World Karting Finals. I went to watch my uncle race there last year and would really love to race there myself.

What is your racing ambition?

When I’m older I would love to race cars and, who knows, maybe go all the way to F1, but for now karting is all I want to do.

Who are your racing heroes?

My dad, he used to race karts when he was younger, so I really want to be as good as he was. Ayrton Senna and my uncle Aaron would be up there too!

What would you like your first car to be?

A Fiat 500.

Petrol head or Sunday driver?

All my races take place on Sundays, but I’m not a Sunday driver. Definitely a petrol head!

Passenger you’d most like on a long journey?

My friend Laura, my best friend from school.

Passenger you’d least like?

Taylor Swift — she’s too happy!

Have you any hobbies other than racing?

Karate, singing, painting, and riding my hoverboard.

What’s on your playlist?

Ruth B, Shawn Mendes, Avici, Sia, Duck Sauce.
