There is something quite pretentious about Desmond Fitzgerald’s description, (Letters July 7), of Israel as a “...successful, vibrant, progressive and equal state...” as, and not forgetting the billions of dollars of subventions from the US, the commentary from within Israel is somewhat different.

In recent days, Daniel Teegan, Charlie Murphy and Charles Hayes, in the letters page of the Irish Examiner, have articulated their hatred and disdain for the Israeli state and its citizens.

I am writing re Charles Hayes’ contention, (Letters 22 June) that anti-Zionism is not the same as anti-Semitism, the first being a moral stance and the latter being, “pernicious..”. 

In the weeks leading up to the same-sex marriage referendum a host of celebrities added their voices to the campaign for a yes vote.

I must admit that I initially thought Charlie Murphy’s riposte to an objective statistical analysis of Gaza’s Palestinian community was a belated April fool’s joke (Letters, April 2).

While Dr Kevin McCarthy’s previous predictions on the outcome of the recent Israeli election were way off the mark, he’s on safer ground when he quotes (Irish Examiner, Letters, March 31) from the excellent survey of attitudes in Gaza, which was carried out by the reliable Palestinian Centre for Policy and Survey Research. 

Charlie Murphy’s latest comment dodges the questions I posed to him. 

It appears from his recent letter to your newspaper that Charlie Murphy’s feelings have been hurt by challenges to his arguments about a resurgent anti-Semitism. 

Recent replies from Messrs Kevin McCarthy, Noru Tsalic and Ciarán O’ Raghallaigh, (Letters, Irish Examiner), to my humble letter on the recently perceived increase in the incidents of anti-Semitism, appear to play the man rather than address what I merely reported as the views of prominent Israelis confirming a link between the behaviour of the the state of Israel, and especially its military, and an increase in anti-Jewish incidents.

We can debate sectarianism and why such narrow-mindedness still afflicts societies, but it is axiomatic that hating another person because of their religion is wrong.

In his recent letter (Irish Examiner, Letters, March 3), Mr Charlie Murphy introduces the notion that prejudice against a religious or ethnic group can be justified or ‘understood’ in light of the ‘link’ with the actions (or alleged actions) of a state.

Charlie Murphy’s response to my condemnation of rising anti-Semitism is sad, but unsurprising (Letters, Irish Examiner, March 3).

While Dr Kevin McCarthy puts recent acts of anti- Jewish prejudice down to “a reflexive action from a cohort that wants to denigrate their fellow human beings ..... in their limited, and limiting, worldview”, he is in denial about the link between this increase in prejudice and Israel’s wanton human rights abuses, as most shamefully shown in the recent assault on Gaza.
