International group BishopAccountability.org has published a list of more than 70 clergy from across Ireland who have been convicted of abuse, or who were named in the Ferns, Ryan, Murphy and Cloyne reports as having faced abuse allegations.

THIS society is again transfixed by scandal. Last week’s confirmation of a mass grave at the Bon Secours home in Tuam, that closed nearly 60 years ago and the belated acknowledgement that “Grace” had suffered decades of abuse reopened wounds that were no more than partially healed.

IT is hard to imagine that a society that has had its failings laid bare by the Ryan, Ferns and Murphy reports; a society that has seen so many vulnerable children die while in the care of the State and, most frighteningly of all, seen scores of immigrant children and minors disappear without trace, should need to be badgered into holding a referendum on children’s rights.

ANYONE who saw the RTÉ programme on Monday night that revealed how our overstretched childcare services can’t protect vulnerable children must be concerned that we learnt nothing from the appalling tragedies lurking in our past.
