THE story of how Edward VIII (James D’Arcy) abdicated the English throne for the love of the American divorcee Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) in 1936 might be a familiar one, but W.E. (16s) offers an unusual perspective, exploring the tale from Simpson’s point of view, and taking into account the fact that while Edward gave up his throne for Wallis, she sacrificed her entire life for him.

Ricky Gervais, with his writing partner on 'The Office', tags this film as his first move away from comedy into drama, and it might well be that his reputation as an original and inventive writer of funny scripts hampers us from seeing him as anything else.

With such a distinguished cast, this re-make of the 1980s classic is raised above the usual level of your average sand-and-sandals epic … though do expect to meet plenty of the customary warring Gods and battles between good and evil.
