Given that he is synonymous with the history of Cork City Football Club, it must be quite the double-whammy for the uninitiated to learn that the club’s new manager John Caulfield was (a) born some 3,000 miles from the banks of the Lee and (b) actually made his League of Ireland debut in the colours of Athlone Town.

Many might have come to worship at the shrine of Man U but, on a balmy evening when a packed Turner’s Cross was looking its best, the majority would surely have left at the end imbued with much admiration for Tommy Dunne, his players and what Cork City football club as a whole are doing for the game of football on Leeside.

When a death is expected newspapers will usually have the obituary ready. So it was with Cork City Football Club yesterday. At mid-afternoon, the prospects for the survival of the club did not sound great, which made the outcome all the more welcome.
