Selecting the man of-the match on last weekend was an easy enough decision, to a point, a straight shoot-out between Pauric Mahony and Austin Gleeson. We went for Mahony but nobody would have argued if we had gone for Austin. Richie Hogan also made the shortlist but if you were to stretch that long-list even further, the results would have shown how off the pace Kilkenny really were.

A dramatic 45 foot birdie putt on the 18th green at Fota Island last evening by Ulster’s Ben Best foiled Connacht of a famous victory on the second day of the Interprovincial Championship. The match ended 5½ points apiece, leaving Leinster, who defeated Munster 8-3, the favourites to retain the title when they take on Ulster in today’s decider.

Bishopstown 1-9 Clyda Rovers 0-8: This fourth-round Cork SFC game at Páirc Uí Rinn Saturday proved an endurance test for both teams. Similarly for neutrals, with the worst excesses of the modern game in terms of ‘blanket’ covering, body-checking an obsession with hand-passing and, additionally, an undercurrent of bad feeling which saw two of seven players yellow-carded eventually shown a red card, another black-carded and several more escape censure.
